Features and Functions of Common Used Aquarium Filter Media

Aquarium filter media for fish tank is essential to ensure water quality and provide a good living environment for fish. The more organisms in the fish tank, the more necessary it is to filter. There are many types of filter materials for fish tank,i will introduce several types which is very common used.

Features: The most commonly used physical filter material has large pores and good permeability, which can cultivate nitrifying bacteria.
Function: Mainly used to capture suspended particles such as food residues and fish feces in fish tanks.

  • Activated carbon

Features: Porous carbonaceous material that can adsorb trace components, pigments, odors, etc. in water.
Function: Effectively removes harmful substances from water, but attention should be paid when using it. If the fish tank is in the process of adding medicine, the activated carbon should be removed first to avoid the adsorption of medicinal effects.

Characteristics: High density, hard texture, usually black or bluish blue in color.
Function: It has both physical and biological filtration functions, can cultivate nitrifying bacteria, and decompose harmful substances such as ammonia and nitrite in water.

Characteristics: Surface roughness, porous structure, suitable for attachment of nitrifying bacteria and other microorganisms.
Function: Provide a space for the growth of nitrifying bacteria and help decompose harmful substances such as ammonia and nitrite in water.

Features: Multi sheet structure, porous interior, large surface area, suitable for cultivating nitrifying bacteria.
Function: It is particularly suitable for use in drip filters, but it is not recommended to soak it directly in water as it will waste its surface flow guiding function.

Features: Similar to an enlarged version of a ceramic ring, it has good breathability and a rough surface.
Function: Used for cultivating probiotics, helping to purify water quality, suitable for large bottom filter fish tanks.

  • Mbbr filter media

1.MBBR filler media is usually made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) material, which has good corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance.
2.The surface of the filler has many small concave convex structures, which increase the specific surface area and provide more attachment points.

3.MBBR filler media is relatively light and can move freely in water without settling at the bottom.

4.Due to its unique design, MBBR filter media have a larger specific surface area and can support more biofilm growth.

5.The design of Mbbr filter media allows water flow to pass evenly, avoiding the generation of dead zones and improving reaction efficiency.
